The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter is a rich, deeply moisturising butter with a light, natural coconut scent. It sinks in within about a minute, is gentle enough for sensitive and dry skin, and the fragrance lasts for hours. One of the brand’s best sellers, and it earns it. Here is my honest review.

I have a bathroom filled with lotions and potions. Things to scrub me, rub me, smooth me, hydrate me and make me smell less human and more fruit like. The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter has been one of the ones I keep coming back to.

I first fell for it during pregnancy, when I tend to swap to something a little more gentle with a more relaxed smell. It has a really light coconut fragrance and left my skin so soft and smooth. Here is how it held up.

The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter tub

As I have been blessed with not only sensitive skin but I’m also prone to dry skin I am always a little sceptical of anything that says 24 hour moisture. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement, and as a very swollen pregnant lady it was lovely to not have an itchy bump where the skin is stretching. Even my husband commented on how nice I smelt, and as a man he never really notices new smells.

My little one is also blessed with the same skin gifts as myself so a post bath slathering happened.

The Body Shop coconut body butter being applied to skin

Am happy to report back that we were both left with soft, smooth skin. The thickness of the butter worried me at first as I find they don’t get absorbed quickly or you’re left with a greasy finish. This one took about a minute post warm bath to soak in and I was able to get us both dressed without our clothes getting stuck or twisted.

Things to Know Before You Buy

  • Don’t use it on your face, it’s too creamy for facial skin.
  • It contains coconut, Brazil nut, shea butter and cocoa butter, so avoid if you have a nut allergy.
  • The scent lasts for quite a while, so there’s no need to apply extra perfume after.
  • A little goes a long way, so one tub lasts a good while.
  • You might be tempted to eat it. Don’t.

After using the body butter I went to the website to check out the ratings it had been given and was not surprised to find that it is one of their best sellers. I bought more as soon as that first tub ran out, and it has stayed in my rotation ever since.

The Verdict

If you have dry or sensitive skin and want a rich butter that actually sinks in rather than sitting greasy on top, this is a genuinely lovely one. The coconut scent is natural rather than sickly, it lasts for hours, and a single tub goes a long way. It was gentle enough for me during pregnancy and gentle enough for my little one after a bath, which tells you plenty about how mild it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter good for dry skin?

Yes. It is a rich, thick butter made with coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter, which makes it well suited to dry and very dry skin. It sinks in within about a minute and leaves skin soft and smooth without a greasy finish.

Can you use coconut body butter while pregnant?

I used it throughout pregnancy and found it gentle and soothing on a stretching, itchy bump. It has a light, natural coconut scent rather than a strong perfume, which is often more comfortable during pregnancy. As always, if you have specific skin concerns during pregnancy, check with your midwife or GP.

Does The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter contain nuts?

Yes. It contains Brazil nut oil along with coconut, shea butter and cocoa butter, so it is not suitable if you have a nut allergy. Always check the current ingredient list on the packaging before use.

How long does the coconut scent last?

The scent lingers for several hours, long enough that you generally won’t need to add perfume on top. It is a soft, natural coconut smell rather than an overpowering one.
