The Best Breakfast in Amsterdam (so far)

It is a weird thing to say that I’m not a tourist anymore, not here anyway. It is really easy to end up in Maccies or the fucking plethora of over-hyped and over-priced pancake houses you see on TikTok or the gram.

There is no denying, though, that after a banger of a night in Amsterdam, you might want the overpriced pancakes and give not one single shit about chowing down on a Maccies breakfast.

But look, I don’t know much, but I know that there are two places of the many I have been to that make a divine breakfast.

What do I mean by that? Well, I don’t mind tourists – God knows we are all tourists from time to time. But the festering pockets of dude-bros trying to get high as fuck, pissed as shit, and then hunting for sex workers are loud and boring.

Buy some edibles, go lay in a park and enjoy it properly.

Whatever, anyway, back to the fucking breakfast.

I have two places that I am going to recommend to you. Neither are by reservation, just turn up and eat. Nice.

Bakers and Roasters

So Bakers and Roasters are a New Zealand style cafe, with a dollop of Brazilian flavour. The vibe is super relaxed. The menu comes in Dutch and English, but the service was all in English when we went – so it’s super easy for non-Dutchies.

I guess for this one, you should also be prepared to splash out a little, but you’re likely on holiday, so – do you care? I didn’t, and I still think about the breakfast from time to time.

I go through phases of eating little to no meat and often opt for the vegan choice on a menu. I honestly believe the plates ofter so much in terms of flavour.

Here is what you get for 15 of your finest euros:

Harissa tofu scramble, avocado, breakfast potatoes, cashew creamy mushrooms, vegan cheese, chilli jam and our housemade gluten-free toast.

When I tell you that the vegan cheese blew my tiny little brain, then it really did.

The chilli jam is a little spicy-sweet sensation too. I had mine with an oat cappuccino because sometimes they taste like trash.

Really enjoyed this one – It was creamy and delightful.

This is the Kiwi Brekkie, with poached eggs. Although you can choose from scrambled or fried.

Everyone knows that poached eggs are the gold standard.

Two free-range eggs poached, fried or scrambled, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, garlicky spinach, creamy mushrooms, homemade tomato relish & hot buttered toast

That will cost you 16 euros and 50 cents – since I’m not the exchange rate, you can work that out yourself into your own currency.

Hoa also had a Homemade Kombucha and a regular cappuccino. The Kambucha is not my jam, but he enjoyed it. As a refresher: Pro-biotic fermented drink made with organic green tea, organic raw cane sugar and live Kombucha culture. Cool.

There are two locations for Bakers and Roasters, we went to the one in De Pijp.

On to the next one, because maybe that isn’t your speed and you want to sit on a rickety chair on cobbles, next to the canal. I gotchu.

Broodbar

So when I went here it reminded me of a renovated living room. There were children’s toys scattered in the corner, someone reading a newspaper and it just felt relaxing.

We went here for breakfast because the week before Hoa did a quick search online, and since he works in Amsterdam wanted to grab some sandwiches. This place came up with the pastrami sandwich that we wanted. Nice.

Anyway, the Broodbar bread sent me to Jesus to have a conversation.

Next time we went to Amsterdam we went straight there. Had to be, of course. If the bread was that good after travelling on the train for 40 minutes, then imagine it fresh.

Phew. Yeah.

As you can see, it was a misty morning, not sure what time this was – about 9.30 I think, maybe just after.

Behind the bamboo is the water, and in front of the planter boxes is a road that separates you from the cafe.

I opted for french toast and bacon, Hoa had bacon and eggs.

When I tell you I learned to cook bacon different after this day. I really did.

The french toast had the slightly eggy taste that I love so much. Soft in the middle but crunchy edges.

The powdered sugar was not too much – like the perfect amount that you want more, but if you had more it would be too much. You know what I mean… maybe.

For the two breakfasts, and two cappuccinos it was €19.50.

I guess we finish on two pictures of coffee, right? Sure we do.
