We arrive about 20 minutes early. I knew the scan was first and I didn’t want to even be 30 seconds late. Who in their right mind would give up the chance to see the unborn for a few extra seconds? Not me. Nope.
So on to the scan and everything came back fine. Or as fine as they can tell. We all know nothing is certain till they are in your arms, and even then – still not certain. But we heard she was around 3lb and had all the right bits in the right place. Super.
Next up was the consultant. I sat down and he said ‘You were a tiny bit over, I don’t think we need to keep you here all morning, lets give you next week off and see you the week after.’
Yippi.
After him was a very stern little man. The diabetes consultant. He asked if I knew why I was here and what it was. Yes to both. Right, so he looked at my numbers, and said maybe we can make more changes. I said yes, happy to make any changes. I am happy to make them, who wouldn’t be?
He gave a prescription for Metformin ‘just in case’. I’m not supposed to pick up the meds unless I think I need them. So I have a bright yellow note sitting in my pregnancy folder for medication. Just in case.
Next up, and last of all – the dietitian. Now, this lady was super. I really, really liked her. She was friendly, helpful and actually pointed out I could add a few things to my diet rather than remove any more. By add a few things I mean I was one portion short per day on dairy however my horse sized vitamin tablet covered it. So it wasn’t necessary. We went through when I ate, my portion sizes and the make up of each plate. I felt totally at ease with her and happily went through my diet. She was happy and said she though that if we keep going with the safe approach she hoped we’d see the finish line as we had planned.
She made me feel normal!
I did see many ladies in there, all shapes, sizes (very, very small to very, very not small), ages and frankly we could have, between us, represented almost every ethnic background in the country. It was nice to know that I’m not alone. Not only that but everyone in there was looking just a bit deflated. A few ladies were walking around with drips, some sitting down with a support worker going through insulin issues.
One – sitting chowing down on an extra large bag of crisps and washing it down with a juice. The smell alone made my mouth water. Jealously isn’t pretty so nor were most of the mothers to be in the room while she crunched those down. I am not comfortable enough to risk the carbs and a spike that way.
I think it must be a common thing to feel a little bit like you’ve failed yourself or your baby. You didn’t quite manage to keep your body in working order.
However, it wasn’t as bad as I thought, I have a week off (due to good food behaviour) and I know that on the 27th of December I will see baby again and we will be one week away from getting either an induction date or the go ahead to try and get to the finish line.
Fingers crossed I stick to my diet, keep feeling positive and can keep no.3 where she belongs until the end.
Until then –
