Whether you’ve got a closet full of Vivienne Westwood bags or you carry your belongings round in an old rucksack that’s seen better days, the contents of a woman’s handbag are sacred.

Here are the essentials that should always be at hand at all times:

A phone charger

There’s nothing worse than your battery suddenly dying just as you were about to post a flawless selfie to snapchat, so make sure you always have a phone charger tucked away in your bag.

Hand sanitiser

It can be a germ-ridden world out there, so make sure you have a little bottle of hand sanitiser ready to use to keep those coughs and colds at bay.

A hairbrush

When you get caught in a gust of wind and you’re having to restyle in a public toilet, you’ll be grateful you packed your hairbrush. (Also, if you’re in a public toilet you’ll also be grateful you packed your hand sanitiser too).

Tampons

Ahhh tampons, the great equaliser amongst women. It doesn’t matter what your style is, it’s always wise to accessorise with a few emergency tampons. It’s sod’s law that you’ll never need them but the one time you don’t have them at the bottom of your bag is the only time you’ll be in need. Such is life.

A book

Handy for if your phone and other electronics die. Handy for if you want to appear intellectual and cultural on the train to impress a cute passenger. Handy if you just bloody love reading.

A pen and notebook

Think how many times you’ve had to write something important down on the back of a receipt with an old eyeliner? Get a mini pad and pen for your bag, already.

A lipstick

“Always leave the house ready to bump into your ex”, they say. Well, who has the time to look immaculate all the time? Compromise and shove a favourite lippy in your bag so at least you can freshen up your face if needs be.

A perfume

A mini version of your signature scent so you can top up after any long commutes or busy days at the office

ID

Because every now and again, a cashier will be oh so lovely and genuinely think you don’t look old enough to be buying wine. And it’s murphy’s law that it will be on the one day where everything has gone wrong, and only a hot bath and a glass of wine can help!

A debit card

Be like the queen and never carry cash, just card. Almost everywhere does contactless now so you don’t even need to go to the effort to type a pin in.

Some change

For things like tips, trollies, and small parking fees. It’s easier to have some change ready!
