Reduce Your Energy Costs In 5 Simple Steps

Energy prices seem to keep rising and rising. It feels like it’ll never stop but the problem is that our wage isn’t increasing at a steady enough rate with them. They are increasing at the fastest rate we have seen in several years and so if we can’t stop the companies from rising the prices, we need to take matters into our own hands.

There are numerous ways you can lower your energy prices. With a few adjustments and a little insider knowledge, start saving money by following these easy hacks.

  1. Insulate the loft properly

We all know that heat rises, so it makes sense to be keeping every ounce of heat from escaping your attic that you can. Making sure your loft is properly insulated is one of the most important things you can do to keep your house warm (and therefore reduce energy costs in the winter). If you’re not too sure about how to tackle loft insulation yourself, get the professionals in to do it instead. Whilst you’ll have to fork out to begin with, you’ll save money in the long run.

  1. Get yourself double glazing

The great thing about double glazing is that it keeps the heat in. The whole point of it is that it will reduce the heat loss from your home which means one thing – gorgeously cosy winter nights without even needing to put the heating on constantly. Without it, up to seventy percent of your home’s warmth is lost – that’s a 70% loss on what you’re paying to heat it up!

  1. Switch things up

Changing the type of lightbulb you use is literally one of the easiest things you can do yourself to save a bucket load of cash, so why wouldn’t you be doing it? Evergreen energy provide great LED bulbs that provide a great quality of light but without the huge price tag.

  1. Make your doors and windows draught proof

There’s no point doing everything you can to warm up your house if you don’t make sure your house is draught proof. Make sure you check every single door and window so you’re not letting even the tiniest bit of heat escape.

Also, make sure you dress your windows in the winter. That means getting heavy draperies as they are fantastically good at keeping the warmth in the house (not just a pretty addition to your home). But remember, in the summer you need to make sure you swap them for blinds as keeping the heat in when it’s too hot means you’ll be wasting extra energy (yes, that means money) on air conditioning your home.

  1. Waste not, want not

For the rooms in your house that don’t really get used (like the study you were adamant you needed upon searching for a house to buy but rarely use), turn off the radiators. That way, you won’t be missing out on warmth in the rooms you do use but you won’t be throwing money away on heating rooms you’re never in.
