More people are choosing to create a business that they run from home. It might be a side gig, or it might be the start of big things.
Either way, you must take steps to protect your business and your family. You can do several things to make sure that if anything happens, you can make sure that your family is safe – and should anything happen with your business, your family is protected. Most of the time, when we think of protecting our family, our minds jump to life insurance for parents – and rightfully so. But, there are plenty of other ways to protect your family financially.

Business Structure
If you are offering medical, legal, or other services, you might not be eligible to have an LLC company – but wherever possible, it is a good idea to do so. The business structure you choose will significantly impact what you are and are not liable for.
When choosing an LLC, you give yourself a layer of protection you might not otherwise have. Specifically, here we are talking about keeping your assets protected. This includes your savings, house(s), and vehicles.
The structure you choose for your business means you will not be liable for lawsuits or bankruptcy.
It is also essential to consider other business structures that might suit you better, but the aim here is to opt for the one that keeps your personal assets separate.
Insurances
When you sell products or offer services, there are occasions where something goes wrong. If you aren’t adequately protected, you can be liable for any issues your client faces. In the US alone, there are over 16 million home-based businesses, and of that, a large portion is uninsured. This means every day; they leave themselves open to being sued.
Even the smallest business and freelancer should check out some insurance specifically for these businesses:
- Business owners policy – also referred to as a BOP, this is an insurance package covering commercial properties and general liability.
- In-home business policy – is a budget-friendly option that covers commercial property, loss of valuable documents, off-site equipment use, accounts receivable, loss of income, and general liability.
- Homeowners policy endorsement – you can add an endorsement to your homeowner’s policy; it increases the limit on business equipment that is covered.
One of those three is a must; the following three are optional – but you will need to make sure that you have the right coverage.
- Workers’ compensation – if you have an employee, then you will need to check if you need this.
- Professional liability insurance – is an essential one; it is also called errors and omissions for any consulting services, instructions, financial advice, and more.
- Business auto insurance – any vehicles that you use will need to have auto insurance for your business.
When you make sure you have the correct insurance to protect your businesses, you will automatically be protecting your family too.
We often rely on the partner who is working in a company outside of the home to have insurance but miss out on the parent at home. Even though the parent at home might not earn the most amount of money or any money at all, they are doing the heavy lifting for the childcare. Life insurance for parents is essential for the one who does the primary childcare and the primary income earner too.
When you run a business from home, you need to make sure you have all of your bases covered when it comes to keeping your growing asset safe and protecting your family from any potential losses.
Balance
There is a lot of talk about balance when raising children and growing a business, but it can be a difficult thing to get. However, it is crucial to make time to be only with your family and time to only work on your business.
Most of the time, you will be trying to answer emails while making dinner or trying to boom Zoom meetings around the school pick-up. However, if you try to do both things at the same time, you’ll feel guilty for only paying 50% attention to both things.
Whenever possible, give yourself a few hours where you can focus entirely on achieving your to-do list in your business, and give the same attention to your family when you need to.
Try to give yourself the flexibility and the room to put one thing before another when you need to.
Depending on the age of your children, there will be a range of different challenges; giving yourself some time to find a balance that works is essential.
Saving
While you might not have much spare cash or anything at all – when you start to make any income from your business, it is important to start putting about 20% aside. The savings will help you pay your taxes at tax time, help you grow your business, or help you through times when your business doesn’t make much money.
Savings are always going to be one of the best ways for you to protect your family and your business.

Stress
Imagine the scene – you have a toddler pulling wires and having a tantrum, but you need to take an important call in 3 minutes, and the doorbells go. It’s all going off. Part of looking after and protecting your business is making sure that you are looking after yourself.
Some level of stress is to be expected when you start running your own business because a lot relies on you having the energy and time to make sure that it takes off. BUT it is crucial that you notice if and when your stress levels are rising and make sure that you are taking the proper care of yourself.
Wellness is an integral part of keeping yourself healthy and able to look after your business.
In most cases starting a business from home is about providing more for your family, but it is important to make sure that both are protected. It comes down to smart decisions about insurance, looking after your health – and those all-important business structures.
