I cook a lot, and I like my kitchen in some sort of order. I like to know where everything is as I go along and I think it’s really important to store your ingredients and utensils safely. We have a pretty good-sized kitchen but we also have a lot of pots and pans. The first thing we put up was a wall rack. We wanted one wide enough to put pans on top, and hang our most used utensils on. This has been a huge space saver and is a really cheap way to add extra storage space. We also have a lot of green in the kitchen, herbs, small plants, orchids and so many more plants. It takes up a bit of space but gives character and life. I often sit and window shop online, looking for inventive ways to revamp my own kitchen storage, new styles, interesting and unusual shapes, bright colours, and something I like to look at.
Next up somewhere to store your vegetables. A big selection of veg will go in the fridge, but root veg, onions, and a few others I keep in the kitchen and in the mobile kitchen island. Although is has space for chopping on top, we actually keep it static and use the top as a breakfast cereal spot. The draws, baskets and shelves are filled with fruit, vegetables, and wine!
Something on a smaller and easier scale to do is left over jars from pickles, jams and other things like that. I used them to store ground coffee, pasta, oats and other dried ingredients around the kitchen on window ledges, in cupboards. Usually, they take up less space than the original packet and they look so much cuter.
They can also be used for cool projects when you have an empty or spare one.
Last year I wrote a post about sorting out your kitchen cupboards, and it was really something I enjoyed doing. I used baskets to neaten it all up and labelled them as I went along. It was also easier to see what I needed to replace. If you compare the two pictures below you can easily see the difference it has made with the space available, and smart kitchen storage can do that for you – free up extra space you didn’t even think you had.
I am a firm believer that if your kitchen is (almost) clean, you know where everything is and it’s a comfortable space you are more likely to cook food to reflect how your kitchen makes you feel. For me I love cooking, I love baking and I love being in the kitchen. It wasn’t always this way, it’s taken some smart kitchen storage, labels and a good clear out to get me there. One day I’d like it to look a little like the photo below, rustic, country, wooden and gorgeous to look at.
