It might seem a bit strange going to Birmingham Botanical Gardens in the winter. The trees aren’t in bloom, the banks aren’t filled with bright colours and the bonsai garden is a selection of twisted bare branches. The thing is, there is still plenty to see. The tropical and subtropical gardens are brimming with lush green leaves, bright pops of colour, and hidden high up gorgeous flowers. The Arid house is alive with cacti of all shaped and sizes. The bird house is noisy and the peacocks that roam around can be found happily eating their food. While the hills and muddy walkways aren’t easy to walk along – you still can. The carnivorous plants are still amazing to look at and read about and snowdrops are gently pushing through and the white delicate blooms stand up against the brown winter landscape.
Is it worth going? Someone asked me.
Yes, and here is why.
For two adults we paid £10.80 (without gift aid), we picked up some gorgeous and lightly fragranced Cyclamen for a snip at £2.50, the gift shop is a mix of bags, pens, garden bits, candles and the nursery outside is brimming with plants, trees and flowers both big and small. After we had done a round in the glasshouses, we moved on to the tea house and had Tea for Two. It came in just over £8 pounds and had a pot big enough for three cups of tea each, two scones, jam, butter and cream. It was the perfect day and we are looking forward to visiting Birmingham Botanical Gardens again in a few weeks to see more blooms.
