There are dozens of articles out there filled with hints and tips on how to renovate your home’s bedrooms effectively. However, there is far less out there about the things you shouldn’t do. Or, more specifically, how to avoid certain disasters entirely. With this in mind, read on for four bedroom renovation disasters, and the best ways to avoid them.

Disaster number one: running out of money to finish the job to a high standard

If you’re doing a full bedroom renovation, the chances are that you will have a lot of different costs to handle. You may want to repaint the walls, or add coving. You might have a plan to remove your current wardrobes and replace them with built-in units instead. Indeed, you might be replacing all of the current storage solutions in the room, from bedside tables to your chest of drawers. The last thing you’ll want is to run out of money before you’re finished. This could mean sacrificing something you had originally prioritised.

Solution: make a budget plan and stick to it

Disaster number two: furniture that you can’t fit through the door!

First off, make sure you consider the size of the items you are buying. Let’s be honest, understanding mattress sizes and wardrobe sizes isn’t easy. You may want to look online for more guidance.

Also, consider this. It’s all well and good measuring the bedroom before you buy furniture. However, what about fitting in through the door? Before you buy anything that is large and non-collapsible, carefully measure any doors it will have to pass through. Consider the front door and the bedroom door. Also, look at ceiling heights.

Disaster number three: a new mattress or pillow that gives you a bad back

A big part of any bedroom is the bed, right? This means that picking the right one is crucial. Sure, the height can play a big part. And you’ll want to find gorgeous, cosy bedding. But your priority should be with the mattress and pillows. It is these two components that will make a difference to how well your sleep, and how well your body is supported. Do your research first as to whether or not you will suit a soft, medium or firm mattress and pillow. Also, consider things like your weight, and whether or not you have any allergies. Finally, if possible, try the two products before you buy them.

Solution: try before you buy

Disaster number four: going crazy with the paint pot

If there is any chance you will want to sell your home in the future, step away from the paint pot! Unless the paint colour is neutral, like cream or white, take caution. Brightly and vividly coloured walls are one of the primary things that put house-buyers off. They want to be able to image themselves and their furniture in the room. They don’t want to be distracted by four fuschia walls and a turquoise ceiling!

If you are going to commit to bright colours in your bedroom, be aware that you will need to invest time and money in repainting them before you try and sell.

Solution: stick to neutrals, and remember that you may want to sell in the future
