The days are getting longer, the flowers are poking their heads out and spring is definitely in the air. Inevitably, we all find ourselves channeling our inner Hobbit, and wanting to do something more than a mere spring clean around the house to make our homes ready for the summer to come.
Here are a few ideas to add that certain something to your home, without it having to cost the earth.
Paint it black
You would be amazed at how effective a simple lick of paint can be to revitalise a home, and bold colours can add a real air of drama and elegance.
Add some shutters
The right window accessories are a perfect way to add a little bit of class to your home, so why go through the pain of taking down and cleaning those smelly old curtains, when instead, you could be measuring for shutters to replace them and add a modern, airy feel.
These are a fantastic alternative to curtains, as in addition to looking great they are far more hardwearing and easier to keep clean.
On top of all that, they are much better at keeping draughts out in winter, and almost act like an additional layer of glazing.
They are easy to install, and even the world’s worst DIY novice should be able to get them in place inside an hour. You can even watch a video guide to see what you will be up against.
Pillows and cushions
Quite simply, you can never have too many cushions around. They are comfortable, they look great and they are hugely versatile. Spare covers can be bought for a few pounds, allowing you to change the look of your living room with the changing seasons (or indeed your moods!).
Shine a light
The right lighting has a massive effect on the ambience of a room, and you can achieve some very special effects.
Recessed spotlights are great, but you will need to bring in an electrician to install and wire them up. A more cost-effective solution might be to scour the shops for a nice lamp or two.
You can pick up some real bargains at second-hand shops, but just make sure that any electrical goods you buy second-hand have been PAT tested for safety.
Your home is a reflection of your personality, and it is the largest single financial investment you will ever make. If those are not good enough reasons to put a little time and effort into adding a touch of class, then I don’t know what is.
You can make some real differences without breaking the bank, so go ahead, and give your home the makeover it deserves.
